History

Ahmedabad the largest city in Gujarat is known to have existed since the eleventh century under the Solankis. The city was known as Karnavati after an old village in the city. Sultan Ahmed Shah considered the founder of the city in 1411, named it Ahmedabad. The city expanded to larger territories under the Sultans of Gujarat who gradually turned it into a well-built city. They added several mansions, palaces, mausoleums, mosques, and gardens to add to the beauty of the city that remained the royal capital for a period of 162 years. Later in the 18th century, the British East India Company took over the city and established a military cantonment there. The city served as an important centre for the independence struggle. Mahatma Gandhi established two ashrams there which played a great role as a centre for national activities. Ahmedabad became the capital of the new state of Gujarat in 1960. The city went on to become a textile industry hub and earned the title of " The Manchester Of India".

Ahmedabad has historically been Gujarat's most important city stretching into the Arabian Sea, with a coastline of 1600 km long is Gujarat – the home state of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of Nation. It is renowned for its beaches, temple towns, and historic capitals. Sabarmati ashram built by Mahatma Gandhi is the most famous and tranquil place for visitors here. Sri Swami Narayan Temple, Jama Masjid, Bhandara Fort, Auto World Vintage Car Museum, Nagina Wadi, Adalaj Ni Vav, Kankaria Lake, Jhulta Minar are only a few popular tourist destinations out of numerous such places. Gujarat is home to some of the most important Jain temple centers at Palitana and Girnar Hills. Apart from historical importance, Ahmedabad is also recognized for its cultural variety, which can be seen in Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, the 11-day awesome festival celebrated with a lot of decorations and enjoyment. Navratri, the nine-night festival is famous all over the country for the dances such as 'Garba' and 'dandiya'. Kite festival in Ahmedabad is famous all over the world attracting thousands of tourists every year.
