History

For centuries, the royal city of Udaipur has been the capital of Mewar. Once, during his hunting expedition, Maharana Udai Singh met a saint in the Aravalli Mountains. The saint ordered the king to establish a kingdom in this fertile valley, protected by the Supreme Aravalis. Therefore, Maharana Udai Sing established Udaipur in 1553 AD. Chittorgarh is the ancient capital of the Mewar Kingdom. Due to continuous enemy attacks, the capital was also moved from Chitogar to Udaipur. Udaipur was the capital of Mewar until it became the princely state of British India in 1818. After independence in 1947, the Maharaja of Udaipur granted Udaipur to the Indian government, and Mewar was incorporated into Rajasthan.

Facts & Culture

Udaipur is also known as the "City of Lakes" because there are many interconnected natural lakes inside and outside the city. The city is also known as the "White City" because the Rajput-style palaces and forts in Udaipur are made of white marble. Due to its impressive beauty, it was also named "Jewel of Mewar" and "Venice of the East". Udaipur is famous for its historic Rajputara forts, magnificent palaces, striking lakes, architectural temples, museums, galleries, traditional festivals, and rich culture. The best places to visit in Udaipur are Lake Pichola, City Palace, Ekringi Temple, Ambrai Ghat, Classic Car Museum, Bad Mahal, and Hilgram. People from the Bhil tribe still live here, so even today, people can still be seen wearing the traditional GhagraCholi, loaded with huge silver jewelry. The modern city of Udaipur is a center for cultural events, folk music, and dance. The ten-day Shilpgram Festival, which begins December 21-30, attracts large numbers of people interested in arts and crafts.
