History

Bharatpur's history stretches back to the 5th century BC when the Kingdom of Matías prospered here. During the Mahabharata War, Matsyas was an ally of the Pandavas. Legend has it that the origin of the name Bharatpur can be traced back to Lord Ram's younger brother, Bharat. Another brother, Laxman, was awarded the most prestigious position as god of the ruling family of Bharatpur. In the early 18th century, Maharaja Surajima defeated the rival chieftain Khemkaran and seized the Bharatpur fortress, and laid the foundations for Bharatpur. The brave Maharaja was very interested in expanding the city and was praised for building many forts and palaces throughout the kingdom, including the Deeg Pleasure Palace Complex.

Bharatpur is also one of the world's most well-known birding sites since it is home to the Keoladeo Ghana National Park (KNP). 250 years ago, the ruler of the time built a dam, flooded the land, and turned it into a swamp. With over 370 species recorded, KNP was once the habitat of the Siberian crane. It is a world heritage site. Apart from the park, some other attractions in Bharatpur are Lohagarh Fort, Deeg, Bharatpur Palace, Ganga Mandir, Government Museum, etc. The colorful festivals of Bharatpur reflect the culture of Bharatpur. The most popular festival in Bharatpur is the Bridge Festival which is a colourful saga enjoyed by a large number of visitors. This celebration occurs a few days before Holi. The city is surrounded by several villages and the rural culture is strongly patriarchal in nature. The society in Bharatpur sets a great example by the joint family system which is commonly followed here in most families.
