History

Guwahati has existed in human history for more than 1,500 years and was the capital of the Kamarupa kingdom. The inscription on the Nilachal rock is irrefutable evidence that Guwahati has been the site of a great settlement for at least two thousand years. The city was of economic and strategic importance from the 9th to 11th centuries. In the epic tale of the Mahabharata, Bagadutta fought for Duryodhan and Kauravas in the final battle. The Mughals attacked Assam several times but the Ahoms defeated them near Guwahati. It was saved and preserved later in the second half of the 17th century, King Ahun further strengthened this. King Ahon settled in Guwahati, and when the government was handed over to the British, they adopted the current form. He shaped the city into the gateway of the northeast. The origin of the name Guwahati has sparked several historical controversies. Gunabhiram Barooah a 19th-century Assamese intellectual believed that the name came from "Guwa" or betel nut, found throughout the city.
