History

The oldest settlement in the area near Sawai Madhopur was around the Ranthambhore fort. The exact origin of the Ranthambore fort is still disputed but it is generally accepted that there was a settlement at the site of the Fort, as far back as the 8th century A.D. It is widely believed that the construction of the Ranthambhore Fort was started during the reign of the Chauhan rajput King Sapaldaksha in 944 AD. Another theory stipulates that King Jayant, also a Chauhan rajput, built the Ranthambore Fort during 1110 AD. It is most likely that the construction of the fort commenced during the mid 10th Century A.D. and continued for a few centuries after that.

The people of Ranthambore are devoutly religious and friendly. They belong to different castes and tribes and are mostly artisans. A majority of Rajputs inhabits the region that are known for their chivalry and valor. The major languages to be spoken here are Marwari, Rajasthani, Hindi and English.

Various native residents of the region are indulged in a variety of craft works representing the rich culture and tradition of Ranthambore. The local markets of the town are fled with some of the beautiful Rajasthani articles such as bandhani and batik fabrics, silver jewelry, traditional paintings, puppets and mementos etc.

 

Fairs and Festivals

The most famous festival of Ranthambore is Ganesh Chaturthi that falls in the month of August or September and marks the birthday of Lord Ganesha. This 10 days long festival is celebrated with great joy and jubilation by the people. Besides, the other important festivals include Guru Purnima, Shirdi Vijayadashmi, holi, Diwali and saraswati Puja that represent the moiety of the culture of Ranthambore.
