History

Jammu's name comes from the incredible neighborhood Bahul master Jambrochan who ruled it in the ninth century. The city was the main transit point for the caravan trade route to Kashmir, Asia Minor, and other regions, and the base of the legendary Silk Road.

The state of Jammu and Kashmir, formerly ruled by Hindus and Muslims, was also ruled by the Mughals under Emperor Akbar. After the end of Afghan rule in 1756, it was merged into the Kingdom of Punjab. In 1846, Ranjit Singh transferred the territory of Jammu to Maharaja Guraja Singh, and Jammu and Kashmir became a single political and geographic entity. Jammu had been under Dogra's rule until India gained independence. Prince Hari Singh, the ruler at that time, decided not to exercise the right of option during the formation of united India instead he signed the accession form when Pakistan attacked the territory that same year.
