History

The history of Jodhpur revolves around the Rathore family. Rao Jodha is the head of the Rathore family and he established Jodhpur in 1459. The city is named after him. It was formerly known as Marwar.  Rathore established and strengthened themselves in the area and they drove out  Pratiharas in Mandor. Except for Aurangzeb, the Russo family maintained good relations with all the Mughal people. Maharaja Jaswant Singh even supported Shahjahan's inheritance struggle. After Aurangzeb's death, Prince Ajit Singh drove the Mughals out of Ajmer and added it to Marwar (now Jodhpur). Under the rule of Maharaja Ume Singh, Jodhpur became a modern and sophisticated city. During British rule, the state of Jodhpur was the largest land in Rajputana. Jodhpur prospered under British rule. Its businessman, Marwaris, had a booming business and began to dominate all Indian commerce. When India became independent, Jodhpur was a very important and strategic residency of India.
