History

This stepwell or the ‘jhalra’ was built in the 1740s by a queen of Maharaja Abhay Singh. There was an age old tradition in Jodhpur of constructing stepwells or step-ponds by the queens or royal ladies. Other than them, some rich businessmen, royal servants and other people also gave fund for the construction of the stepwells. Even the eunuch servants of the royalty made two stepwells in the city. This is the reason why Jodhpur has more than 100 stepwells and step ponds in the city.
