History
Bikaner has a great influence on the history of Rajasthan. In 1459, Prince Rao Bikaji, a descendant of the founder of Jodhpur, Rao Chodaki, established his own kingdom in Bikaner. He chose a barren land called "Jungladesh" to shape the city of Bikaner into a magnificent city. The city had adequate water for travellers on Central Asia and the Gujarat coast trade route. Bika the ruler built a fort which was built again and known as the famous Junagarh fort. Later in the 18th century, there was a war between the rulers of Bikaner and Jodhpur. The British troops put down the war. Maharaja Gaj Singh ruled Bikaner for many years and added a lot of features to the famous fort. Later under Maharaj surat Singh's rule Bikaner came under the British Government due to a treaty.
Facts & Culture
Bikaner is the main attraction of traditional Rajasthan attractions. The city has many fascinating buildings made of red-pink sandstone. The old town of Bikaner is surrounded by a 15 to 30 foot high stone wall with five gates. The architectural feature of this city is that many buildings are constructed of bright red and yellow sandstone. As for the sights of the city, the main tourist attractions are the Largarde Palace and the Junagarh Fort. Junagarh Fort is made of marble and red sandstone and has a balcony decoration structure. The fort is a unique blend of Mughal and Gujarati architecture. The mesmerizing beauty of the Chandra Mahal, Anup Mahal, and Karan Mahal with exquisite gold work, wooden work, and Italian tiles is a delight for the photographers. The museum houses royal jewels, costumes along with paintings of the royal family. The Sanskrit and Persian manuscripts are a great attraction here. Bikaner is a city rich in culture in all aspects: arts, crafts, festivals, and dances. One of the most famous festivals in the city is the Bikaner Camel Festival and Fair.

The Laxmi Niwas Palace, Bikaner
0.0
The Laxmi
Niwas Palace was commissioned by His Highness Sir Ganga Singh Ji in 1904. The
impetus behind it was two-fold – to provide employment to the townspeople and
to create a stately residence worthy of the royal house of Bikaner. His
Highness was a man of impeccable taste and supervised the artists, masons and
builders personally in their endeavours. Many of the friezes on the palace’s
walls, the geometrically perfect symmetry of its outlay, the ornate filigree
work and latticed screens may all be attributed to his artistic vision and
temperament. He was also a famous host and his guests, (nearly always royals or
dignitaries with packed agendas) tended to overstay, sometimes for months
longer than they had originally intended. We hope the grace and charm of His
Highness’ former abode and our hospitality will have a similar effect on you.

Narendra Bhawan Bikaner

A
grand residence, Narendra Bhawan Bikaner is composed of Narendra Singhji’s
memories from his travels to destinations near and far. Unconventionally
curated, the Bhawan organically grew into a snapshot of the life of its
original resident who upon spreading his wings was subconsciously casting a new
modern identity for himself much like that of his mother country. A pulsating
Bombay influenced by the burgeoning Art Deco movement, influences drawn from
the glamour posts of Broadway; dark inviting caverns, rich velveteen fabrics,
chiffons and pearls; utterly stylish – all added to the cornucopia that led to
the fashioning of this, his private palace-residence.

Karni Bhawan Palace

Karni Bhawan Palace was home to Maharaja Karni Singh,
Maharaja of Bikaner, and built in the deluxe art deco style, popular in the
1940s in the US and Europe. Its Doric pillars, ornamental staircases and large
windows bear testimony to the artistic brilliance of the past. While its
well-preserved paintings, old photographs (of the royal houses of Bikaner and
Mewar), period furniture and curios lend a distinctive ambiance that relaxes
the travel-weary guests.

Go back to a time when lunch was called luncheon. Look up to usta art on
old Burma teak-paneled roof. On the walls, a continuous frieze, in tempera, of scenes
from hunts. Alongside, a hand-painted panel of stone, the figures as fresh as
the day they were laid on. This is not the dining chamber of commoners. Swarna
Mahal serves up a dauntingly elaborate traditional Rajasthani thali and other
regional cuisine with élan. Lal Maas, or mutton cooked in gulmohar flowers, is
a huge draw. Our chef is partial to Thai, Indian and very many Continental
staples

Our
bar is decorated with the carefully selected spoils of royal hunts. The house
of Bikaner had many prolific shots, and their skill is plain to see in the
likenesses between the pairs of animals chosen. Above the single beam of
mahogany that forms the bar, the huge heads of a rhinoceros and a Nepalese
bison square off. There is a spectacular leopard in a vitrine and pairs of
lionesses, platypuses, boars, deer, tigers, Royal Bengals and a couple of
hair-raising coyotes mounted on the walls. Have our barman whip up one of his
spicy bloody marys or another of his stellar cocktails and enjoy the company of
your new drinking buddies.
