History
Construction of the famed temple was completed in 1848 AD at a huge cost of 8 lakh rupees which was considered to be a huge sum during that time. Hutheesing’s son Muggenbhai Hutheesing along with Lockwood de Forest started up a new venture called the Ahmedabad Woodcarving Company in 1881. As per Lockwood De Forest the cost of the temple was estimated to be over a million dollars.Gujarat had been adversely affected by famine during the development of the sacred complex. As such it proved to be a blessing for the artisans involved in the construction of the temple. Most of the artisans deployed were those from Sompura and Salat communities.Sompura artisans are well known artisans famed for their craftsmanship skills in stone carvings and sculpting and are especially involved in making sculptures in Hindu and Jain temples. Legends state that there is a 170 years old lamp that is still lighting beneath the sanctum sanctorum.
