Legends state that once the Goddess of Wealth, Lakshmi was about to leave the city when a watchman named Khawaja Siddique Kotwal at the Teen Darwaza pleaded her not to go without informing the then emperor Ahmed Shah. She was convinced to wait till the guard returned after meeting the King. The watchman went to meet Ahmed Shah but beheaded himself to ensure that the Goddess remains in the city forever. There is a mausoleum near the Bhadra Fort built in honour of the watchman. A Muslim family has been lighting a lamp in one of the opening of the historical gateway for more than six hundred years now. Flowers and atar are offered at the cavity with the belief that Goddess Laxmi resides there. Another cavity nearby is named after Ahmed Shah.A temple dedicated to Goddess Laxmi is also established near the Bhadra Fort. Used as an entrance for a long time, Teen Darwaza appears in the logo of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Intricately carved pillars of the remarkable arched gateways exude admiration. The term Teen Darwaza means three doors out of which the central one is the tallest and is adorned with the images of lions and Lord Ganesha. Rest two doors are named as Char Darwaza and Wagh Darwaja.
