One of the most famous places in Bhopal, the Upper Lake, locally referred to as ‘Bhojtaal’ or ‘Bada Talab’, is the oldest man-made lake in India. Dating back to the 11th century, the lake is believed to have been built by Raja Bhoj.

The 12th-century Bhojpur Temple is considered one of the best examples of temple architecture in the region. The focus is on the abstract representation of the god Shiva or "lingam" in the sanctuary of the temple. The height is 2.35 meters and the circumference is about 6 meters. Above is an intricately carved ceiling with carvings on the rocks.

The State Museum was established as Edward Museum in 1909 AD by the rule of Bhopal state and governed with the name of Ajayabghar in the present central library building. After the formation of Madhya Pradesh state, the museum was shifted to the building at Banganga road and was called as Bhopal Museum. In 2005, the State Museum, Bhopal was inaugurated in a new form in a newly constructed building and is one of the beautiful specimens of architecture.

It was constructed by Qudsia Begum, the first female monarch of Bhopal (reigned 1819–1837), also known as "Gauhar," and is now more than 200 years old. The palace, which served as the Begum's residence and workplace, is renowned for its Indo-Islamic design. 

Moti Masjid is one of the many mosques located in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Even though the mosque is relatively smaller in size as compared to the other exquisite and historical monuments that stand majestically in the 'city of mosques', the Moti Masjid is of equal importance. This famous historic landmark was built by Sikander Jehan Begum of Bhopal, daughter of Qudusiya Begum, in the year 1860. Sikander Begum was an unconventional woman who abolished slavery and set up the trend of the progressive woman in the entire city. Popularly known as the Pearl Mosque, the mosque is located in the heart of the city and represents the rich history of the Bhopal Begums in India.

The Bimbetka Rock Shelter is India's oldest known rock art and one of the largest prehistoric complexes found.

Sanchi, variously known as Kakanaya, Kakanava, Kakanadabota and Bota-Sriparvata in ancient times, has a singular distinction of having remarkable specimen of Buddhist art and architecture right from the early Mauryan period (c. third century BC to twelfth century AD). Sanchi is famous in the world for stupas, monolithic Asokan pillar, temples, monasteries and sculptural wealth.

The Shaukat Mahal is one of the architectural curiosities of Bhopal. It is a strange mixture of Indo-Islamic and European styles of architecture. It was designed by a Frenchman, a descendant of the Bourbon Kings of France. Post Renaissance and Gothic styles have been combined in an enchanting manner in the building.
