History

The origin of the city of Bhojpur may be due to Rajabhoj, the same person who founded Bhopal in the 11th century AD. Bhojpur is home to the Shiva Temple ''Bhojeshwar Mahadev", one of the region's most important cultural heritage sites. The temple is a remarkable piece of architecture. The walls of the temple have no windows and are made of large blocks of sandstone. The walls before restoration did not contain cement material. On the north, south, and east walls, there are three balconies on a huge haunch. These are purely decorative artificial balconies. Except for the sculpture on the front wall, this Makara sculpture is the only sculpture on the outer wall. The images of the eight goddesses were originally placed high on the four inner walls (two on each wall). Currently, only one of these images remains. The Temple is unfinished but is used for religious purposes. Thousands of believers visit the temple in Mahashivaratri. The Madhya Pradesh Government holds an annual Bhojpur Utsav cultural event at the complex around Mahashivaratri.
