History

Bhopal is the capital of Madhya Pradesh and was built in the 11th century in the city of Bhoja, which was founded by King Bhoja. The city was originally called 'Bhojpal', after king Bhoj and the dam ("pal") that he is said to have built, forming the lake around Bhopal. The city was founded in 1707 and is the capital of the former state of Bhopal, a British princely state ruled by Bhopal Nawab. In the 18th and the 19th century the city was ruled by Begums for almost a century. The city flourished in culture and arts under the Begum rule. Due to equal opportunities to all religions and castes , Bhopal came to be known for communal peace and cosmopolitan culture.
