History

Bimbetka is an archaeological treasure with approximately 243 rock shelters and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The paintings found at the rock shelter here are very similar to the paintings found in Kakadu National Park, Australia, the Bushman cave paintings of the Kalahari Desert and the Lascaux cave paintings of the upper ancient stones of France. A childlike wonder comes to life as you stroll through these ancient, naturally-formed rocks surrounded by the dense forests of Bimbetka. A 47-minute drive from Bhimbetka, you can also take a tour of Bhojpur. A temple of Shiva houses a Shivalingam about 7.5 feet high in its sanctum. The construction of the temple is believed to have begun during the reign of King Bhoja, King of Paramara.
