History

During the British rule, Shillong was the capital of the integrated state of Assam, and later until the independent Meghalaya state was established. David Scott, a British officer of the East India Company, is an agent of the Governor of the Northeast Frontier. During the First Anglo-Burmese War, the British authorities believed that a road connecting Sylhet and Assam was needed. This route will pass through the hills of Kasi and Jaintia. Since the British used it as a civilian station on Khasi and Jaintia hills in 1864, Shillong has been growing steadily. In 1874, when the Chief Commissioner was established in Assam, it was chosen as the seat of the new government because of its convenient location between the Yarlung Tsangpo River and the Sulma Valley, and because of the climate of Shillong is much cooler than the of the tropics. Shillong served as the capital to Undivided Assam. Later It became the capital of Meghalaya.
