History

The name Mumbai is derived from Mumba or MahaAmba, the name of the protective deity Mumbadevi. The name "mother" means "mother" in Marathi. Mumbai (officially called Bombay until 1995) is the capital of the state of Maharashtra. The Koli lived in fishing colonies on the seven islands that would later become Mumbai. For centuries, the islands were ruled by successive indigenous empires before being handed over to the Portuguese Empire and then to the East India Company when Charles II of England married Catherine of Braganza in 1661 and the ports of Tangier and the Seven Islands of Bombay received it as part. dowry. The Hornby Vellard Project transformed Bombay in the mid-18th century, making it a major seaport on the Arabian Sea. Economic and educational growth shaped Bombay in the 19th century. After the Samyukta Maharashtra movement in 1960, a new state of Maharashtra was founded in 1960 with Bombay as its capital.
