History

Around the 6th century, with the decline of the Gupta dynasty, Prakshin I of the Chalukya dynasty took control of Badami and made it the capital of the Chalukya dynasty. Pulakeshin I and his descendants are called Badami Chalukyas. After the death of Prakshin I, other rulers such as Keltiwaman I and Mangalesa of the Kalka dynasty ruled Badami until Prakshin II took control of the dynasty. Pulakeshi II was a powerful ruler who ruled Badami from 609-642 AD.

After his death, due to infighting, the dynasty briefly declined and Palavas used and controlled Badami. They ruled Badami for 13 years, Vikramaditya, I brought Badami from Paravas. Kirthivarman I and Mangalesha, sons of Pulakeshin I, built the world-famous cave temple in Badami. Kirthivarman II, son of Vikramaditya II, was the last ruler of the Chalukya dynasty. He ruled Badami from 746 to 753 AD and was later overthrown by King Rashtrakuta Dante Durga in 753 AD.
