History

Pushkarini was a swimming tank that was considered to be a source of great joy for God and was especially favored by Sir Vishnu's wives Lakshmi and Bhudevi. Lake Agastya is believed to have been transported to earth by 'Garuda bird' the vehicle of Lord Vishnu and is said to cleanse the sins of bathers. At the foot of the diminishing dry ravines, in the center of Badami is Lake Agasthya, which surrounds Badami's rock temples and cave temples from all sides. Just 1 km from the Badami bus stop and the city center, Lake Agasthya is a huge reservoir of natural origin rather than man-made. The size of the lake is so large that the water spreads under the cave temples on both sides.
