History

Badami is picturesquely located at the entrance of a canyon between the two rocky hills. Four rock-cut caves, adorned with ancient carved columns and statues of red sandstone brackets, are remarkable. This group of four cave temples was carved from the hill opposite the Badami Fortress. Three of them are of Brahmanism and the fourth is Jainism. The cave overlooks Lake Agastya Theertha, dotted with 7th-century Bhutanatha temples. These are dedicated to Shiva's form as the god of souls, spirits, and ghosts. The caves are best seen at sunset when the evening sun captures the rust-red tint of the sandstone. A visit to Pattadakal is coupled with the visit to Badami and Aihole.
