History

The Badami Fortress was originally built in the Chalukyan architectural style, but when Badami came under Tipu Sultan's control, the walls of the fortress were rebuilt and several structures were added to the old fortresses. The fortress is surrounded by double walls. The entrance to the fortress is guarded by a statue of Nandy, the bull of Lord Shiva. The fortress has a large granary, a vast basement, a carved temple, a strategically placed watchtower, and several other impressive structures. In the center of the fort is a Masjid-like structure (tomb) believed to have been built by Tipu Sultan. The fort was attacked several times and a large cannon in the fort is a stark reminder of this. The Badami Fort is a great example of the architectural grandeur during the Chalukyan rule.
