Almora is situated on a ridge on the southern border of the Himalayan range's Kumaon Hills. In 1791 the Gorkhas of Nepal started expanding their boundaries to Almora and ruled the region for almost two decades. Gradually the British tried to curb their intrusion and in 1814 the Anglo- Gorkha War started here. Ultimately the Gorkhas lost and all the territories annexed by them were ceded to the British.
