History

The word Kodaikanal means "the gift of the forest." In the mid-19th century, the British missionaries used Kodaikanal as their summer resort, turning the mountain station into a retreat. This place first had residents in the 1840s, they were Palaiyar. Apart from the British, the French,  Germans, Irish, Americans were also keen to settle in the scenic town. In 1821, Lieutenant B.S. Ward was the first recognized Englishman to settle in this incredible place. Gradually Kodaikanal became a summer resort for high-level British royalty in the summer. CR Cotton Judge, Associate Collector, Dr. Weight, and Dr. Fane are the leading Brits who built houses in this wonderful place. Over time, Kodaikanal has undergone many developments, making it one of the top tourist destinations in India.
