History

According to Hindu mythology, Shiva and Parvati married here at the confluence of the Gomati and Garuru Ganges rivers, so the Baijnath temples are quite significant to the Shaivists. The Shiv Linga inside the temple is said to have been formed naturally from the earth on its own. The temple is famous for its ancient and magnificent idol (standing idol) of the goddess Parvati carved in black stone. To reach the temple, one has to use the sloping path that ends at the end of the Gomati River. In front of the complex is a pond called "Golden Mahaseer", which is part of the Gomati River. The golden fishes of the pond are the center of attraction. At the entrance are the two stone inscriptions revealing general information about the temple. Decorated with delicate and intricate carvings, this magnificent temple complex is said to have been built in Nagara style.
