History

The area now forms the Bageshwar District, which was historically known as Tempur, and was ruled by Katiris in the 7th century. After the disintegration of the Kingdom of Katyuly in the 13th century, the area was still under the rule of Bejnath Katyuer, a direct descendant of King Katyuly. In 1565, King Balo Kariyan Chandder annexed Dampur, along with Bali, Balamandar, and Mankot, to Kuman. In 1791, Almora, the seat of Kuman, was invaded and annexed by the Nepalese Gurkhas.
