History

Legend has it that after defeating the devil Bhima, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Bhimashankar Jyotir Lingam. The sweat flowing from the body of Lord Shiva is said to have taken the form of the Bhima River. Today's temple sanctuaries and Shikhara are built in the Nagara or Indo-Aryan style and have a strong Rajasthan and Gujarat influence on the temple's sculptures and motifs. Built on Swayambhu's lingam, the pillars and door frames of this temple are adorned with intricate carvings. On the temple grounds is another small shrine dedicated to Lord Shani. There is a shrine called Kamalaja near the Bimashankar Temple. Gupt Bhimashankar, Sakshi Vinayak, Hanuman Lake, Nagphani, and Bombay Point are other places to visit near Bhimashankar.
