History

It was 150 years ago that a local market, a noisy, congested place, was established in the area of Duncan Road where Chor Bazaar now stands. At some point, Grant Road Station pushed the market into its current site.In Hindi, the market was referred to as "Shor Bazaar," or "Noisy Market," because of its loud merchants and crowded byways. As a result of a pronunciation problem, Europeans referred to it as "Chor Bazaar," which translates to "Thieves Market." As time went on, the market was renamed "Chor Bazaar" as a result. Some people believe that Queen Victoria's violin and some other valuables went lost as they were being conveyed from England to India, and were subsequently recovered at Chor Bazaar, a flea market in Delhi. In spite of this, there is no one who witnessed the event.Chor Bazaar was formerly a thriving marketplace for stolen goods, regardless of the origins of its name or its current status. The Chor Bazaar was a common destination for the resale of stolen goods from across the city.
