History

Ajanta is located on an ancient trade route known as "Daksinapasa" in ancient literature. Ajanta is known for its Buddhist story murals, including Buddhist life scenes, Bodhisattva Avadana stories, Jataka tales, and Mahayana Buddhist-themed Vipriya sutra panels. Most of Ajanta's donors, especially the early caves, were traders. There are more than 100 inscriptions telling the story of donors, including monks, kings, ministers, and more. The monastery functioned here until at least the 8th century AD but was forgotten until it was rediscovered in 1819. Ajanta inherits the Gandhara and Mathura art schools during the Kushana era. Gupta Sanas Art School. Amaravati Art School in the late Sata Bahana and Ikshvaku eras. In fact, Ajanta had a great influence on other Buddhist caves found in the West Indies.
