History

The name comes from Aurangzeb, the ruler of the Mughal dynasty. Its ancient history dates back to the Buddhist era, but the modern history of Aurangabad dates back to 1610. The Buddhist caves of Aurangabad and Ellora reflect the powerful influence and flow of early Buddhism in the city.

Mohammad Bin Tughlaq tried to change the capital of his sultanate from Delhi to Fatehpur in the 14th century, keeping in mind the strategic location of the city. In 1653, after Aurangzeb captured the Kingdom of Deccan, the name of the city was changed to Aurangabad.

Aurangabad was taken over by Nizam of Hyderabad after Aurangabad's death in 1707. Nizam retained control until it merged with Maharashtra in 1956. Aurangabad today provides an excellent opportunity to rewind past history. The Ajanta and Ellora Caves and BibiKaMakbara take visitors back to the history of the city.
