History

It was referred to the "Hill of Gods" by the Yadavas of Deogiri as "Devagiri" or "Deogiri" in its ancient form. Initially, the Yadavas ruled over the present districts of Dhulia and Nasik, with Chandradityapura serving as their capital, under the Chalukyas of Kalyani (modern Chandor, Nasik district). One of the great Yadava monarchs, Bhillama V, constructed the city of Deogiri and relocated his capital here after winning wars against the Hoysalas, the Paramaras, and the Chalukyas. Yadava monarchs have kept their capital at this location ever since.
