History

The Bekal Fort covers 40 acres and has a huge wall about 12 meters high made of local laterite stone. It is a large fortress, with strong sea-side walls and ramparts, through which a fortress with cannon openings penetrates. The main gate is protected by the bastions and the fort is surrounded by a moat. The main features of this fortress are tanks with stairs, tunnel openings to the south, magazines for storing ammunition, and wide slopes leading to lookout towers. This tower is unusual and offers fascinating views of the surrounding area. From there, it has a broad view of all the important places in the area and is also of strategic importance to ensure the safety of the fort. The huge laterite wall cavity was used to place the cannon. Recent excavations at the fort have revealed various types of secular and religious structures built on laterite from the Nayaka era of Ikkeri and Tipu Sultan.
