History

Bekal is a small town in the Kasargod district of Kerala. Originally called Baliakulam it became Bekulam and later Bekal. The town is supposed to have been a critical center for military activities during the reign of Tipu Sultan. It is here that Tipu led a large military expedition to conquer Malabar. Several artifacts and coins discovered during the excavations at the Bekal Fort establish a strong presence of the Sultan of Mysore. The famous Bekal fort came under the British East India Company after Tipu Sultan sacrificed his life.

Within the company area, Bekal is now the headquarters of the recently established Bekal Taluk, South Kanara District, Mumbai. South Kanara became part of the Madras Presidential Palace in 1862 and Kasaragod Taluk settled in Bekal Taluk. Little by little, the political and economic importance of Bekal and its port has diminished considerably.

Facts & Culture

Located in the center of Kerala, the coastal city of Bekal, nestled among honey-colored beaches, pristine waterfalls, and beautiful backwaters of crystal clear waters is an emerald, secluded and spectacular tourist destination. The city is home to the majestic 300-year-old Bekal Fort, the largest fortress in Kerala. The other major attractions of the town are 45 Nityanandashram Caves, Chandragiri Fort, and Kappil Beach. The town is characterized by tranquil beaches, stunning sunset views and exciting opportunities for water sports and nature walks. The city also has a rich cultural heritage, which is reflected in its unique handicrafts, such as granite idols, coconut products, and wood carvings. The town is also the gateway to picturesque places nearby like Kannur. The local Kannada writer Rama Nayak once wrote that Bekal's name comes from "Baliakulam", which means a great palace. This is a reference to the palaces that were once located in the area.
