History

It is said that the original name of Champawat was Champavati because it is located on the bank of the Champavati River. To the west of the area is a fortress named Donkot, where the local king Raut lives. There are seven ancient temples in Champavati Valley: Baleshwar, Kranteshwar, Tadkeshwar, Rishneshwar, Dikteshwar, Mallareshwar and Maneshwar, among which Baleshwar Temple is considered the most important. The district is surrounded by lush tea gardens which produce one of the finest teas in the region. The place has many places to see the famous among them are  Nagnath temple, Kranteshwar Mahadev, Ek Haathi Kaa naulia. 'Aarti' is held in Champawat as thousands of people participate. Ganges Dusshera or Dasar festival sees people worship the Ganges for ten days. During this period, people plunge into the holy river of the Ganges to wash away all the sins of past and present lives. ChampavatTiger is a Bengal tiger that caused approximately 436 deaths in the Kuman region of Nepal and India in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His attack was included in the Guinness Book of World Records.
