History

Auli's history dates back to the 8th century. The temple built by the great Guruadi Shangkaracharya still exists here. For almost a decade, the colorful semi-nomadic Bhotiyas tribes have traveled across the trails of Auli (known locally as Thatauli). Their long-haired yak helped them develop a thriving trade with nearby Tibet. Auli is located in the Chamoli district of the Himalayas in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Auli, also known as Auli Bugyal, in Garhwali, meaning "grass", lies at an altitude of 2,800 meters.

Facts & Culture

Auli culture is mainly inspired by Tibetan and Garwari traditions. The tribes here are very religious. Auli, located in the northern part of Uttarakhand, is a new member of the Indian tourist map. Auli is located in the cradle of snow-capped mountains and is one of the few places in India where skiing is the main hobby. The cold wind, thick snow-covered scenery, and densely covered mountains make Auli a skier’s paradise. Many festivals in Auli are related to skiing and tourism. Ski festivals and national ski championships are held here every year. Auli also hosts the South Asian Winter Games. From June to October, the valley is one of the regions with the greatest variety of flowers in the world, with 520 tall plants, of which 498 are flowering plants, and also a large number of endangered species.
