History

Kottayam literally translates to "fort inside" (Kotta + Akam). At today's Kottayam, the kings of Munjanad and Thekkumkur resided in Thazhathangadi. There are several ruins of palaces and castles in the area. The current Kottayam area is part of the former Travangel princely state. Previously, Travancore Manor was composed of two revenue divisions, namely. There is a "Diwan Peshkar" administrative control in the Southern District and the Northern District. Later, in 1868, two more divisions were formed, Quilon (Kollam) and Kottayam. Next came the fifth Devikulam division, but it was a short time, and eventually joined Kottayam. When Travango and Kochi (Kochi) merged in 1949, these income divisions were renamed districts, and Diwan peshkars gave way to district collectors, paving the way for the birth of the Kottayam district in July 1949.
