Popularly known as the Kottayam Cheriapalli, St. Mary's Orthodox Church is an ancient Orthodox Syrian Church located in the scenic Kottayam Town. Built by Thekkumkoor Maharajah in 1579, this church has exquisite architecture. Pilgrims and devotees would appreciate its right blend of Kerala and Portuguese architectural styles. The beautiful murals adorn the walls of this church. You can see those murals on biblical and non-biblical themes and in both oriental and western styles. With pillars, pediments, cornices and galleries, the European architectural style is truly a great attraction of this church. It is one of the oldest and well-preserved churches in the state. The church celebrates its annual feast on January 15th every year which draws many people from far and wide.
