History

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), affectionately known as the "Darjeeling Toy Train," travels between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in West Bengal, India, on a 2-foot narrow gauge track. Taking a train ride on this 88-kilometer-long railway line was a sought-after experience when it was built between 1879 and 1881. There are breathtaking vistas of the Himalayas from the Darjeeling Toy Train's elevated gondola car, as well as passing through little towns and stores filled with excited youngsters. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway connects the Darjeeling hills and lower plains and is a stunning example of technical ingenuity and vision. A little steam engine is the only way to move smaller coaches up the high slopes, overcoming practically infeasible bends and gradients. The Darjeeling Toy Train was included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 2, 1999, presumably because of its unique history. The Mountain Railways of India were built as a result of the addition of two more train lines. Taking a trip on such a historic train is both soothing and prestigious because it was originally the country's first and most essential route to the mountains.
