History

  • Until the beginning of the 19th century, it was controlled by the Kingdom of Sikkim. Some adjacent areas were occupied by the Kingdom of Nepal. With the arrival of the East India Company, Britain became interested in the region, which led to Darjeeling's incorporation into Britain in 1835. In 1856, Britain introduced commercial tea cultivation in the region, and it soon became a hot spot for tea production and export. Before independence, Darjeeling was a summer resort for British officials and a sanatorium for British soldiers. After India's independence in 1947, Darjeeling merged with the Indian state of West Bengal. The mountainous area was and is still inhabited by the Nepalese nation, while the Bengal community constitutes the plain.  In the 1980s, the region witnessed protests and unrest in the country separated from Gurkha. In a short period of time, the protests have also become violent. In 2011, the Darjeeling Gurkha Council was replaced by the Gurkha Territorial Administration (GTA), giving the regional government more powers.
