History
The Batasia Loop is a huge semi-circular railroad loop made primarily for tourists. It is about 5 km below Darjeeling Ghoom Station. The loop contains a monument dedicated to the Gurkha soldiers who died in the 1947 struggle for independence. It was first put into operation in 1919. The toy train that crosses Batasia Hill via the Batasia Loop is a beautiful sight and a wonder of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. The loop reduces the sudden steep slopes of the hills and hill stairs on either side of the loop, making it a great place to stay. The best way to see this place is, of course, a toy train. The toy train stops at the Batasia Loop for 10 minutes, giving you stunning views of the surrounding area. There is also a small market near the loop. The loop and its surroundings are so beautiful that passers-by tend to take pictures, so keep your camera handy.
