The monument is important because it represents a replica of the tomb dedicated to the Holy Prophet and his family. Imam Bara is a monument that is a perfect example of Nawabi architecture. There is a mosque "Bawali" (a stepwell mainly used in the summer), Tajiya, Zari, 489 identical doorways, a domed archway, an interconnected walkway leading to a three-dimensional maze, and the tomb of Asaf Ud Daula. The Bara Imambara is one of the largest dome-shaped structures that are prone to get lost, with huge halls and maze-like passages.
This is a network of over 1000 labyrinthine corridors, some with dead ends, some ending on steep slopes, and some leading to entrances or exits. Another fascinating structure of Imam Bara is the pre-Nawabi five-story baori (stepwell). This Baori is called Shahi Hamam (Royal Bath) and connects to the Gomti River. Only the first two floors are above the surface and the rest always remains below the water. A large number of pilgrims visit the site during Muharram.
