History

The town is charming and relatively untouched, but modernization is leaving its mark on it day by day. In the historic homes, red bricks and tiled, sloping roofs are a common sight. The house is built around a central courtyard that serves as a laundry and drying area for common household tasks. Low ceilings and thick whitewashed walls characterize the rooms arranged around the center area. In other cases, the woman of the house has painted beautiful designs on the doorway and windows. The residences in the community are constructed close to one another. The cobbled roads are only widening at the intersection of two lanes for the community's benefit. Ancient sculpture fragments and statues can still be seen strewn about, either supporting a roof or leaning against a wall. The village's youngsters have grown up among visitors their whole lives and are fluent in English, French, and even Japanese.
