History
Historic and cultural significance are evident at the Chottanikkara Bhagavathy temple. The Bhogacharya was known for his devotion to the Divine Goddess. Adi Shankaracharya, Vilwamangala Swamiyar, Chemmangattu, and Kakkasseri Bhattathiri were among the heavenly saints who prayed to the laterite god Rudraksha Sila. The holy saint Adi Shankara deserves all the credit for the Goddess's genesis. Adi Shankara is reported to have pondered on the Devi at the Kodachadri Hills in present-day Karnataka after realising that Kerala lacked a temple dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. His dedication pleased the Goddess, who consented to accompany him on foot, but only if he didn't glance back once, to see whether she was there. However, on their way to Kerala, the saint was obliged to peek back to check on her, and the Goddess stayed set right there! The sacred Mookambika, located in the Karnataka state, was the location.Goddess Bhagavathy consented to stay with Adi Shankara after Adi Shankara's heartfelt pleas for her forgiveness. She took her dwelling at Chottanikkara as Goddess Bhagavathy, as per Adi Shankara's wishes.Consequently, devotees think the Goddess will be at the Chotanikkara Temple in the morning and will return to Mookambika in the late afternoon to be present for the worshippers there. As a result, the doors to the Chottanikkara temple are opened first thing in the morning, followed by those to the Mookambika sanctuary.
