History

The Basukinath Temple is arguably the most famous temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Legend has it that the Basukinath Temple is the court of Lord Shiva. The Lord listens to his followers who visit the Dham with respect and dedication. The Kanwariya ritual observed in Shravana (month) is closely related to this legend. Pilgrims carry pots filled with holy water from the Ganges and offer at Ajigai Vinath Mahadev and Baba Dham in Deoghar. From there they march to Baba Basukinath Dham and offer "Abishek" at Shiva Linga. There is a pond called Vanganga near the temple. Pilgrims bathe in this sacred pool before taking Shiva's Darshan. During this ritual, the prayers of the devotees are heard by Lord Maheshwar, who is believed to provide peace to his devotees.
