History

Raja Bhum Chand, the ancestor of a line of 500 monarchs, named Kangra the capital of his "Trigatra" kingdom. Kangra has a view of the Banganga and Manjhi rivers. In A.D. 1009, Mahmud Gaznavi's fourth voyage to India ended with the loss of Punjab because Kangra's fort was so renowned for housing wealth. The enormous structures, which once posed a challenge to kings, are now in ruins, especially in the wake of the earthquake in 1905. A massive gate made of strong wooden planks that is mounted on the hinges of a sandstone arch guards the entrance to the fort. Eight feet is almost fifteen feet. Ranjit Singh Gate is its official name. The fort is shut off from the outer world by a moat made of granite that connects the Banganga and Manjhi rivers.
