Amaravati's great Buddhist stupa or Mahachatiya is one of the greatest architectural marvels of ancient India. It was made in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. Founded during the reign of Ashoka Maurya, it expanded into the 1st and 4th centuries AD under the auspices of Satabahana and Ikshvaku rulers. It was a center of religious activity until the 14th century. Since it is a light-shaped stupa, it has great significance.
