History

The mythological creatures devas, yakshas, and kinnaras were supposed to have committed penance to the Hindu deity Shiva to conquer the monster Tarakasura in Amaravati, which means "Abode of the Gods." The Amareswara Temple is one of the five Pancharama Shiva temples in Andhra Pradesh. Amaravati, also known as Amaravathi, has a history dating back to the 2nd century BC. It was a prosperous metropolis of the Satvahana Kingdom in ancient India, according to 2000-year-old history.

The Satvahana kings protected both Hinduism and Buddhism with equal zeal.  It brought knowledge and logic to Amaravati's culture. Amaravati clearly has a rich history as the former capital city of the Satvahana Empire. Many historical facts attest to the Buddhist impact on Amravati's culture in the past. Amaravati rose to prominence in the region as an old Buddhist center. Its monasteries and university drew students from all across India, as well as East and Southeast Asia. The Buddhist stupa erected here during the reign of Ashoka in the 2nd century was formerly one of the biggest in India, but only ruins remain.
