History

Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta) is the capital of West Bengal. It is located on the east bank of the Bhajrathughli (Ganges) river in eastern India. This city is a colonial city developed by the East China Company and the British Empire. Calcutta was the capital of the British Indian Empire until 1911 when the capital was moved to Delhi. Kolkata developed rapidly in the 19th century and became the second-largest city in the British Indian Empire. This was accompanied by the development of a culture that fused Indian philosophy with Arab traditions.

The stately homes of famous Kolkata legends, such as Nobel Prize-winning poet Rabindranath Tagore, may be seen in the northern portion of Kolkata, the city's oldest area. This part of the city is also home to the busy Kumatuli clay-making area. There, potters created realistic religious icons for many festivals in the city.
