History

Tripura's capital, Agartala, is the second-largest city in North-Eastern India and is barely 2 kilometers from neighboring Bangladesh. Before being called 'Agartala,' the city was known as 'New Haveli.'Rangamati, the modern-day Udaipur in South Tripura, was originally the state capital. In 1849 AD, Maharaja Krishna Kishore Manikya moved his capital to present-day Agartala. Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Bahadur, on the other hand, is credited for inventing modern-day Agartala.

Agartala the capital city of Tripura, has derived its name from 'Agar' a kind of oily valuable perfume of 'agaru tree', and the suffix 'tala' means a storehouse. The incredible natural beauty, rich cultural treasure of the city makes it an ideal tourist destination. The city is home to princely estates, palaces,  as well as modern buildings. The Ujjayanta Palace is the most popular tourist destination in the city, Neermahal is a magnificent palace built by King Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya. The most revered Hindu temples here are the Jagannath Temple and Lakshmi Narayan temple. Located beside the Raj Bhawan, Rabindra Kanan is a beautiful lush green garden. The handicrafts in Agartala are full of exquisite cane and bamboo handicrafts, and woolen items. The most famous festivals of Agartala are Ashokastami, Durga Puja, Kharchi Puja, the Orange and Tourism Festival, and the Budha Fair. The boat races are also a popular tourist attraction of the city.
