History

The Jajpur district was established by King Somavanshi "Jajati Keshari" in the early 10th century. The area is named after his host city, Jajpur. The history of the Jajpur region has been synonymous with Biraja and Birajaktra since ancient times. Jajpur District was established on April 1, 1993. Before that, it was part of the Cuttack Zone, divided into four zones. The area is bounded by Keonjhar and Bhadrak districts in the north, Cuttack district in the south, Dhenkanal district in the east, and Kendrapada district in the west.

Facts & Culture

The Jajpur district was once the great artistic and cultural center of ancient Orissa. The area is declared a "Biraja Kshetra" heritage zone and is one of the ancient cities of Orissa with rich archaeological remains. It is known as one of the important tantric kshetras of the state. Many historical monuments such as Bilaha Temple, Lord Balaha Temple, Dashwasa Medagat, Jagannath Temple, Three Rochaneshva Temple, Ratnagiri, and Udagiri, for tourism. Jaipur is also known as Navigaya. People from Jeonju and surrounding states came here to offer SHRADDHA on the banks of the Batalini River. Ratnagiri and Udaygiri attract a large number of Buddhist followers here.

Art makes a rich and diverse land, and Jajpur’s art and culture are the product of a long historical process. In this process, the spiritual level, the philosophical level, and the humanistic level merge with each other to produce the best results of culture and civilized life. Jajpur is embodied in its vibrant art form. The area has a rural tradition of painting, architecture, sculpture, and handicrafts. There are three genders in Jajpur School: Jyoti, Chita, and Muruga.
