History

The British invaded Naga territory in the 1840s, but the Nagas strongly opposed it. The British took almost four years to conquer less than 10,000 square kilometers of territory. Kohima became the first constituency of the Naga Mountains. In 1963, Nagaland became a full-fledged state and Kohima became the state capital. The city witnessed the bloody battle between the allies and Japan during World War 11. The Commonwealth War Cemetery is dedicated to  10,000 Allied soldiers who died during the Japanese invasion during World War II. The Battle of Kohima lasted almost three months and the heroic fighters who fought for the Allies performed an admirable mission to stop the Japanese invasion of the Indian border. There were 17,857 British and Indian casualties among the allies. Before leaving Kohima, the British erected this monument to commemorate their comrades.
